A little bit of comfort

How many times have you found yourself thinking: I just need something positive; I need a break from life’s challenges and hardships and heartaches? What did you do then? Maybe you called a friend and asked to have a cuppa together to share your feelings? Maybe you opened a bottle of wine and had a glass or two? Binge watch old movies? Went for a relaxing walk along the ocean or in the mountains? Overindulged yourself eating your favourite food?

Whatever you have done or are doing in those moments is your own way of seeking COMFORT. And we all need that. The Bible is full of stories of people seeking comfort and asking God for it. Abraham, Moses, Job, some of the Old Testament prophets (such as Isaiah 40:1) cry loudly to God about their struggles and ask Him to intervene. What we learn through these stories is that God listens to our prayers and cares about our feelings, He “comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God” (2 Cor 1:4).

In a few days we will start the liturgical season of Lent – the time of deepening our relationship with God while we see Him giving His life for us. What if, this year, instead of the traditional not eating sweets or meat (which is of course a noble Lenten resolution still highly recommended) we turn it into the time of seeking comfort in His love and of bringing comfort to others through our own acts of kindness?
