Cherishing memories

I realised that I love being active, collaborating and working in a team. Being industrious with others charges me like a high-power battery of an ant soldier. Ever since I attended primary school, I enjoyed being involved in many activities outside school curriculum. I liked playing musical instruments and singing. I loved drama and participated in youth activities in my local parish. These were my places of socialising and building friendships. Those activities often were time consuming, but also gave me energy, as I enjoyed my time with like-minded people.

Back then, my mum would shake her head and joke by saying that I am not living at home, I am only sleeping there or visiting. As a result of my busy activities, sometimes there wasn’t much time to eat, but whenever there was, I would always be very excited and enjoy the family simple meals.

From time to time, I would help my mum in the kitchen by making a cake or making simple “mini-pizza on bread” (which we called: zapiekanka). The simple process of creating these little treats eventually were shaping my experiences of what it means to be at home and having a homey feeling. It would mean togetherness and joy.

Last Saturday, when I was preparing “zapiekanki” for my small community at home I was taken back to my family’s home and recalled the joy I have had when preparing and serving this simple supper.

What experiences have brought YOU joyful memories in the past? Were those experiences connected with the food you enjoyed? Or something else?  What memories would you cherish in your life?
