We all have layers

Couple of weeks ago, as I was doing my weekly grocery shopping, I saw a beautiful cabbage in the nearby veg and fruits market. Tempted by the idea what I can create with that cabbage, I purchase it, and then decided to make the Polish cabbage rolls (called: golabki). The first step of making those rolls is boiling the cabbage and to take apart each leaf. There were many layers – some of leaves were tough – especially those close to the core of the cabbage. Some very soft – especially those on the outside, as they were more exposed to the power of boiling water. I had to be very careful with all of them – making sure that the soft ones will not fall apart and that tough ones will not break while I was filling them up with the mince meat and rice and rolling into the shape for further cooking. Some of the leaves were falling apart, and I needed to use two of them to be able to form a roll. The cabbage making that day made me think about our life experiences and our responses to what we are going through. The difficult “heated” experiences quite often make us vulnerable and fragile despite the common saying that “what will not break you will make you stronger”. Sometimes our brokenness requires from us to admit that we need others to be able to form whatever life requires from us. But this does not make us less. Each layer of our talents and abilities in our life can be used for ourselves or in order to support others. Our value does not come from perfection but from the “wholeness” – being part of something bigger and greater – this will always give others a source of spiritual nourishment which they might need for their life.
